Admission and studies

The University Act and the University of Graz allow individuals who are permitted to reside in Austria according to asylum law to apply for admission in an unbureaucratic manner. When asylum seekers apply to the University of Graz, these applications are also processed after the end of the grace period. Furthermore, by decision of the rectorate of the University of Graz, asylum seekers who are legally staying in Austria are not required to pay tuition fees. This decision has been valid since the winter term of 2015/1026 and will also affect the winter term of 2016/2017.

When applying for programme admission, the following documents need to be submitted:

  • completed application for admission to programmes for international students
  • residence card according to asylum law
  • personal documents: These include (a copy of) a passport/identity card, proof of the general university entrance qualification in the form of certificates from secondary school (high school diploma, secondary school leaving examination), transcript of records (of studies already commenced, if relevant) and, if available, language certificates for German. Non-English documents need to be translated by a local translator.

If an individual does not possess any valid personal documents due to external circumstances (e.g. difficult conditions of flight from their country of origin), the decision taken by the university management will depend on the type of problem.

Please note: Course places at treffpunkt sprachen are only open to asylum seekers with temporary right of residence according to Austrian asylum law (persons entitled to asylum, persons entitled to subsidiary protection, asylum seekers whose asylum application has been accepted by the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum) and holders of a refugee travel document or foreign passport who have been admitted to the University of Graz.

If you are interested in a language course at treffpunkt sprachen, please bring your confirmation of the course and/or your registration confirmation with you. For all questions concerning the language course, please contact Mag. Alexandra Tzivanopoulos: alexandra.tzivanopoulos(at)uni-graz.at
