What we do

In late summer 2015, the refugee situation became increasingly serious. In view of this, the University of Graz introduced a first package of immediate measures in mid September 2015 in order to provide access to education and to support the integration of asylum seekers and recognised refugees. Vice Rector Dr. Peter Riedler has taken on the task of coordinating this package of measures.

“The University of Graz, as the largest educational institution in Styria, is aware of its social responsibility. Over the coming weeks we would therefore like to establish a flexible, expandable package of measures as a sensible long-term response to current and future challenges involved in resolving the refugee issue,” says Rector Christa Neuper.

The focus of the initiatives for recognised refugees and asylum seekers wanting to enrol at the University of Graz lies on the following main points, which consist of various different actions:

  • Simplified admission procedure and German language courses
  • Counselling and support in everyday student life

Educational programmes and long-term support for integration

Since then, several educational opportunities have been developed based on appearing demands, with the aim of facilitating long-term support for refugees and asylum seekers in integrating in Austria. Experts from various different areas such as intercultural communication, mediation and German as a foreign and second language are working together to design concepts to encourage language acquisition, learning and integration.
